2011 Jeep Liberty

The 2011 Jeep Liberty maintains Jeep’s longtime reputation for creating good off-roaders, but it cannot compete with smooth-riding small SUVs that make more sense as everyday vehicles. When the Jeep Liberty was new, test drivers grumbled about its weak V6 engine.

Overview of the Car:

There are three trim levels available in the 2011 JEEP LIBERTY:

  • Sport 4WD: 16 City / 22 Hwy MPG
  • Limited: 15 City / 21 Hwy MPG
  • Renegade: 15 City / 21 Hwy MPG

Performance and Fuel Economy

The engine of the 2011 Jeep Liberty is acceptable but unimpressive in terms of performance. The 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 engine produces ample torque, but its low-revving, raspy, and not relatively smooth demeanor complements the rugged-themed Liberty in a manner that would not work in more cars. Acceleration and fuel efficiency are not particularly impressive, but this is not an engine that requires many downshifts, so it gets by with the slightly jerky four-speed automatic gearbox.

The Liberty is still available in rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive configurations. Four-wheel-drive cars do not track well on the road, although the steering is reasonably quick on all paths. That does not convert to excellent maneuverability since it feels unstable, particularly on bumpy highway surfaces. Nonetheless, that translates to competent low-speed handling, which may be appealing to some city dwellers who spend their weekends on the trail.

Comfort, Quality, and Styling

The Liberty’s fundamentally excellent packaging is ruined by an uncomfortable ride, an unpolished feel, and a lot of hard plastic. The seating configuration—and the interior as a whole—in the 2011 Jeep Liberty feels light and spacious. While the seats are uncomfortable and lack support, there is enough headroom and legroom in the front and plenty in the rear for most—enough for four people to feel comfortable on a weekend trip, for example. The luggage floor is very low compared to other off-road utility vehicles, and the seats fold down neatly to provide a surprisingly large capacity.

That is the good news; otherwise, there is a lot of bad news to report. The Liberty’s on-road ride and refinement are perhaps its most significant drawbacks. The Liberty, being a tall, narrow car with a pitchy ride, causes a lot of ‘head toss’ on bumpy roads or even choppy highways.  Inadequate road surfaces appear to disrupt passenger’s composure just as much as they seem to upset the 2011 Jeep Liberty’s grip. There is also a lot more road and wind noise inside than in more carlike small crossover cars.

Safety Features of the Vehicle

Liberty’s safety equipment is fairly excellent, but there is not enough information to say the same for its occupant protection. The 2011 Jeep Liberty does not skimp on safety measures. There are side-impact and side-curtain airbags, digital stability control, active head restraints, and a variety of additional electronic off-road assistance. However, its crash-test credentials are not as impressive; it only receives a concerning ‘marginal’ rating from the IIHS in side-impact safety—the IIHS’s second-worst rating.
