2003 Toyota Tacoma

Toyota knew customers preferred compact trucks, and the company’s Tacoma pickup caters to their preferences. The Toyota Tacoma has a long history of reliable service as a work truck and a reputation gained through hard effort as a winning off-road racing vehicle. The 2003 Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck that can accommodate any activity- professional or recreational.

The Tacoma lineup begins as a straightforward two-wheel drive truck that offers quality, durability, and dependability. The series ultimately caps off with luxurious four-wheel-drive variants that provide amenities on par with those of small sedans.

Engine Performance

There are three different engine options available for the 2003 Toyota Tacoma.

2.4L

The vehicle’s foundation is a four-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine producing 142 horsepower.

2.7L

A four-cylinder, 2.7-liter engine producing 150 horsepower is standard in all PreRunner and 4WD variants. This engine is the middle power plant.

3.4L

The S-Runner comes standard with a 190-horsepower, 3.4-liter V-6 engine, making it the most powerful option. Transmissions come manually with five speeds or automatically with four speeds; the manual transmission is standard.

The output of the 3.4-liter V-6 engine will increase to 260 horsepower with the help of a supercharger supplied by Toyota Racing Development and installed by authorized dealers. And trailers weighing up to 5,000 pounds can be towed by Tacomas with the V-6 engine. There are a variety of payloads available, from 1,375 to 2,005 pounds.

Design

The main change to the 2001 Tacoma was the crew cab now had four doors.

The Tacoma extended cab remained open with two doors.

The extended cab had a 6 feet bed, compared to the crew cab, which was only 5 feet 5 inches long.

Unfortunately, many customers were dissatisfied with the tiny beds available for crew cabs, and there wasn’t much demand for bigger truck beds among rivals.

S-Runner Trim Package

2001 saw the introduction of Toyota’s new S-Runner trim package, which included a V6 engine of 3.4 liters, alloy wheels measuring 16 inches, a five-speed manual gearbox, and Tokico gas shocks as standard equipment. From 2001 through 2004, just 200 individual devices were manufactured.

Sales of the Toyota Tacoma increased by 16.5%, and have continued to gain popularity since.

In 2004, the Toyota Tacoma outsold both the Nissan Frontier and the Dodge Dakota, falling short of the Ford Ranger by just 2.2 percent in terms of overall sales.

2009 Move to Texas

At the Chicago Auto Show in 2004, Toyota presented the Tacoma, which was in its second generation. This particular version was put together in Tijuana, Mexico, and Fremont, California. At this time, all the plastic and composite beds were still manufactured in Mexico.

This continued until August of 2009, when Toyota announced that it would move production of the Tacoma pickup truck from Fremont, California, to San Antonio, Texas. As a result, production of the Tacoma was consolidated with that of the Toyota Tundra, and all American-made Toyota pickups are manufactured at the same facility.

Bench Seats

The base model of the Tacoma has a bench seat that accommodates three people. Bench seats that split 60/40 are standard in Xtracab models. Bucket seats come standard in Double Cab models and are available in other Tacoma body styles. Xtracabs has two additional rear jump seats, and the Double Cab features a split bench in the back that sits three people and folds down to provide more space for goods.
