Caterpillar – History and Machinery Types
Caterpillar makes its construction and heavy industry equipment, each of which boasts the CAT logo on its most prominent part. It has got all the reasons to use the brand name, for they come on the list of America’s Fortune 100. Caterpillar altogether designs, engineers, produces, markets, distributes, and sells its machinery. Moreover, it offers financing options to its clients via its worldwide network of dealers and inventories.
History of Caterpillar:
Holt’s family came up with the name “Caterpillar” when their photographer exclaimed that the equipment looked like a giant caterpillar during a test drive on a farm. The company owner Holt didn’t like the name caterpillar, but they eventually settled on it after calling the equipment “Mud Turtle” and “Tread Mill” for some years.
It was about 1925 when Best and Holt merged their companies to establish a new tractor-producing company, Caterpillar Inc, which was widely known then.
Holt had great expertise in producing tracks, while C.L. Best worked on producing gasoline-based products. C.L. Best worked hard to improve performance and reliability, and some of his techniques are still a part of the CAT equipment DNA.
After the World War, Caterpillar also faced the consequences of The Great Depression. Still, it didn’t give up and kept investing in the equipment that could add to the economic status of America and be valuable for running businesses.
They tried to connect the world-generating powered equipment; the first actual motor grader is a part of this product lineup. C.L. Best worked on the Diesel engine to cut costs and improve efficiency. It took them only sixty years to become the world’s best and largest diesel engine producers.
Whenever you imagine Caterpillar equipment, huge yellow machinery appears in your mind. In truth, they have not always been like that. CAT machines had gray bodies with red trims that were not appealing, especially at night. In 1931, they thought to replace the color with something eye-feasting. Paint specialists came up with the CAT yellow that could distinguish our machines from others. The trim color changed to black in this update, and the same color is being used so far.
Product Line Growth:
Initially, Caterpillar company created products to ease the agriculture process; each product came with five models. But people found ways to use their equipment in construction and industry that broadened the company’s vision.
They produced Diesel engines, and the limitless growth began as they started manufacturing powerful machinery that could make the mining process more efficient. Their product line has now expanded to over a dozen products with many models and different purposes.
Engine Creation Line:
Caterpillar invested considerable money, which is over 1 million dollars, in the research and development of the first diesel engine, which was a considerable amount at that time. It was designed to boost the power of Caterpillar’s sixty track-type tractors. Still, the company soon started a separate engine-creating lineup that provided engines for marines and generator sets.
Now you can find CAT engines used in electrical powerhouses, petroleum, agricultural, industrial, and construction fields. Caterpillar manual describes the operations of these engines in different external conditions.
The Caterpillar read between the lines and adopted a foreseeing approach. Their products have made the world a better place by contributing to the creation of valuable bridges, canals, and roads that have made the world connect better and faster.
It knows the need for time and works on its commitment to improving the environment, industry, and connections.
Machinery Types of Caterpillars:
Be it a construction field, industry, departmental store, or agricultural farm; you will see a caterpillar boasting its grace proudly. CAT product line is now a long list of 300 pieces of equipment. Let’s look at the wide range of machinery from Caterpillar inventories in different models yearly.
Caterpillar’s efficient articulated trucks help with sharp turns and working on rough terrains. It offers considerable flexibility.
The heavy-duty CAT asphalt pavers are the go-to sidewalk, road, and park ground pavers during construction.
The skid steers manufactured by Caterpillar are well known. A Cat skid steer is able to work seamlessly with larger machines to create a well-rounded team on the construction site. Skid loaders are responsible for the majority of fine dirt movement and other small-to-medium sized tasks.
Drill rigs from CAT are powerful enough to drill water holes, oil wells, water wells, and even natural gas extraction wells. CAT has released four rig deals that run on different powers and get the job done efficiently.
Dozers provide earth-moving service by pushing the rubble, stones, and soil off the ground. Initially, farmers used it in fields, but now they are used in various work settings.
The compactor is what Caterpillar manufactured, intending to reduce environmental waste. Compactors use their great energy to compact waste material for renewal purposes.
They produce multiple other products that include Cold planers, Backhoe loaders, electric rope shovels, draglines, hydraulic mining shovels, and excavators. There are also forest machines, material handlers, motor graders, telehandlers, track loaders, off-highway trucks, pipelayers, road reclaimers, underground longwall, wheel loaders, and much more.
