2007 Cadillac XLR

The 2007 Cadillac XLR, a retractable hardtop convertible, demands the automotive world. The 4.6L Northstar V-8 VVT (variable valve timing) engine and lightweight chassis and structure of the Cadillac XLR, a luxury roadster with performance vehicle heritage, give a stunning mix of sports aptitude and exquisite elegance.

Overview of the Car

The 2007 Cadillac XLR is offered in 3 trim levels:

  • Base: 4.6L V-8 engine
  • Passion Red Limited Edition: 18″ chrome aluminum wheels
  • Platinum Edition: 18″ polished aluminum wheels

Performance and Fuel Economy

The engine, which is a 90-degree DOHC, four-valve-per-cylinder engine with an aluminum block and cylinder heads with a roller finger follower valvetrain configuration with roller finger followers, is found in the Northstar 4.6L V-8 VVT engine used in the 2007 Cadillac XLR. It has a power output of 320 horsepower (239 kW) and torque of 310 lb.-ft. (420 Nm). Continuously variable valve timing (VVT), electronically controlled, hydraulically hydraulic actuators intake and exhaust cam phasers on all four camshafts for additional control, electronic throttle control (ETC), low restriction intake and exhaust manifolds and cylinder head ports, close-coupled catalytic converters mounted directly adjacent to the exhaust manifolds. An air induction system designed for increased capacity and noise attenuation is also included in the package.

Gearbox Location

Another benefit of this Cadillac roadster that is not shared by the competition is the gearbox located at the back of the vehicle. A near 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution is achieved, resulting in superb balance. Additionally, the footwell area is exceptionally generous, giving passengers plenty of legroom.

Design

The 2007 Cadillac XLR has Keyless Access, making it a genuinely “keyless” vehicle. The driver merely keeps the fob in their pocket or handbag to activate the doors, trunk, and ignition. The fob connects with the computer control system of the XLR through radio antennae hidden under the car’s bodywork. XLR was one of the first automobiles to feature Adaptive Forward Lighting. This technology allows the headlights to modify the illumination pattern in unison with the vehicle’s steering, significantly improving a driver’s nighttime vision.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive cruise control is available on the XLR. While not a replacement for complete driver attention, this device enhances the use of cruise control. ACC employs a radar sensor located at the vehicle’s front to identify things in its path. The system maintains the selected speed if the lane ahead is clear, much like traditional cruise control. When it detects a car in the same lane as the automobile in front of it, the system then changes speed to maintain the driver-specified following distance.

Technology in Design

The technology measures wheel motion over the road surface using four wheel-to-body displacement sensors and reacts by modifying shock damping at rates nearing one millisecond. The XLR is a modern embodiment of the Cadillac’s history of iconic design and cutting-edge technology. XLR, inspired by the design of stealth fighter aircraft, delivers a stunning presence of contemporary elegance and performance. The XLR’s bold grille, for example, pays homage to Cadillac’s past while freshly expressing itself. The division’s current design concept, on the other hand, is expressed by the vertical headlights.

Frame Designed for Smooth Ride

The XLR has steel hydroformed perimeter frame rails, an enclosed structural ‘tunnel,’ an aluminum cockpit layout, and balsa-cored composite flooring, all patented by GM. This construction, which provides stiffness without mass and great resistance to torsional and bending stresses, is the basis for the XLR’s superb ride and handling qualities.
