Repair Manuals: Which Manual Do I Need?
Sometimes, it can be very confusing for the vehicle or equipment owner to decide exactly which manual is needed to serve the purpose intended. There are many different manuals issued for each vehicle or piece of equipment, and it can be a bit overwhelming. A Book By Many Names
The Repair Manual is also known by many other terms. It is called the Service Manual, the Service Repair Manual, the Shop Manual, the Workshop Manual, or the Factory Service Manual. This can add to the confusion when trying to search for the correct manual you need.
This is especially true when considering that many people are primarily aware of the owner’s manual, due to it’s ubiquity with passenger vehicles.
To OEM or Not
Among the most important factors in choosing the right manual is whether or not to go OEM. The original equipment manufacturer, via its designers and engineers, tend to have the most thorough information. Some examples include Ford, Caterpillar, and Freightliner, to name a few.
Repair Manual Contents
It is more important for you to know the information the Repair Manual contains. Let’s use the vehicle as an example, but the same basic info will apply to heavy equipment as well.
A Repair Manual for a vehicle will not only give you repair instructions but will make things clear and easy to understand. This includes many visual aids such as Tables, Charts, Illustrations, Cutaway Views, Photographs, etc.
In the standard vehicle repair manual, including all GM makes, there are usually 5 main sections covered. These include the Chassis, the Powertrain, the Electrical System, the Body, and a Maintenance and Lubrication Section. Let’s examine more closely what you could expect covered in each section.
THE CHASSIS
Exactly what is the Chassis of a vehicle? It is the frame on which the vehicle is built, kind of like the foundation of a home. It is the main structure to which all of the other vehicle components are attached.

The Chassis section of the Repair Manual will guide you through repairs to the Steering System, Suspension, Driveline, and Brake System. For example, a Ford F-150 chassis may require additional care due to other jobs it may have, such as hauling and towing.

People often confuse the Powertrain with the engine. And, although the engine is a part of the Powertrain, there is more to it than that. A Powertrain is every component that helps to convert engine power into vehicle movement.

THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The Electrical System Section of the Repair Manual is pretty much as you would expect. It covers everything electrical. In addition to instructions, there will be wiring diagrams for you to follow to make the specific repair.

BODY

MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION
This is the section of the Repair Manual you will refer to most regularly. Regular maintenance is crucial to a vehicle’s longevity. The more regular care you take of your vehicle, the less often it will break down. For example, keep a Chevy Corvette engine running will be of the utmost important to the performance and value of the car.
The Maintenance and Lubrication Section will include schedules and instructions for the items that need regular attention. These include Oil changes, checking coolant levels, checking transmission fluid levels, checking brake fluid levels, tire rotation, filter changing, etc.

DO I NEED THE MANUFACTURER’S SERVICE MANUAL- OR IS A 3RD PARTY REPAIR MANUAL OK?
There are several 3rd Party Repair Manual companies around. However, they are typically re-written summaries and often cover several years and models in each Repair Manual. With a original equipment manufacturer’s manual, such as Ford, the information will be YEAR and MODEL SPECIFIC.
It is also my belief that the absolute best information you are going to get on repairing a vehicle, can only come directly from the original engineers and manufacturer of the vehicle itself.
WHAT ABOUT ‘FREE’ TO DOWNLOAD VEHICLE REPAIR MANUALS? ARE THEY SAFE?
While it may be tempting to get anything we can for free, consider what inaccurate info could cost you in the long run. Aside from the risks involved in visiting potentially unsecured sites online, there is a risk of incomplete, partial or re-summarized information.
A vehicle is a big investment, and you should only want the best, most accurate instructions in a Repair Manual.

Your repairs and maintenance can also now be done on your schedule, and you are not at the mercy of the appointment calendar at the mechanic’s shop. And, let’s face it, you know your vehicle better than anyone else.
WHEN I BUY FACTORY ORIGINAL- DO I OPT FOR CD OR BOOK SET?
This decision if both are available is a personal preference choice. Some folks love having the CD, as Dodge often provides, and just print out the specific section they need, for the repair they are doing. Others absolutely always want the book in their hands, to reference and flip through right as they are working on the repair.
And, when you are repairing older vehicles, you will find that only paper manuals are available. CDs didn’t really become a thing for service repair manuals until the late 1990s.
