When compared to its predecessor, it is both bigger and styled in a more menacing manner. The increased dimensions of the 2008 Scion XB provide for an increased amount of cargo space. There is now sufficient space for people in the second row thanks to the passenger seat in the front that can be folded completely flat. It is convenient to have storage space beneath the seats in the second row, but after an hour of sitting in them, neither the front nor the rear seats are very comfy. The seatbacks consist of little more than cloth stretched over a frame. The attempt to save money is not exactly hidden from view here.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The engine that powers the 2.4-liter inline-4 found in the 2008 Scion xB produces 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This last figure is crucial since there is now enough low-end power, which the prior iteration of xB lacked substantially. The new xB may be purchased with either a manual gearbox with five gears or automatic transmission with four speeds with auto manual control. During the performance tests, and xB that was outfitted with an automatic traveled from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 8.6 seconds.

Even after considering the EPA’s updated 2008 rating methodology, the fuel economy of the 2008 Scion XB is not as excellent as it was in the prior edition. This is because the 2008 xB is bigger and has a larger engine than the previous version. The new xB has a mpg rating of 22 in the city and 28 on the interstate.

Design

Since the outside style of the 2008 Scion xB is odd, there’s no reason to expect the inside to be any different. Our antipathy for instruments positioned in the middle of a dashboard is not limited to the xB; it is shared across all vehicles. At least the speedometer has a digital reading; the tachometer, on the other hand, is ridiculously tiny and positioned at an unusual angle.  It’s a pity that the rest of the xB is so user-friendly and pleasant, but its peculiar ergonomic design detracts from that. The transmission shifter, included with both the automatic and the manual, is situated high, as is Scion’s new array of audio control units, which are available. This makes operations that are often difficult and distracting, such as scrolling through an iPod, simpler and safer.

Perfect for the Taller Driver

The xB has the most tall-driver-friendly front seat of any tiny Toyota car, making it ideal for drivers over six feet tall. Despite its diminutive exterior dimensions, the inside of the xB is rather roomy. However, it would be good to have a steering wheel that could telescope. The usefulness of the xB readily makes it a more fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive alternative to small SUVs. Its greater cargo room (21 cubic feet) and broader body make it easy to do this. For example, the xB’s 69.9 cubic feet of room is just three cubic feet less than the Toyota RAV4 when both back seats are folded down to their respective 40/60 configurations.

Nice Ride

The 2008 Scion xB is a huge upgrade over the vehicle it replaces, feeling more solid and sturdy than the previous box, especially while traveling at highway speeds. Even though it is 2 inches shorter than the model it replaced, it still has a rather high center of gravity, which contributes to a continual body roll that is not particularly concerning. The xB is not designed to be a high-performance automobile, but it handles corners with a good amount of assurance and has a good steering feel and reaction. However, while being set for a pleasant ride—as is the case with most cars in the Toyota family—the suspension is still sporty enough to suit Scion’s youthful and hipster market.
