2014 Mercedes GL-Class

The 2014 Mercedes GL-Class comes in GL350, GL450, GL550, and GL63 AMG trims. Using the new Splitview dashboard panel, two separate pictures may be shown on one display. Front-seat passengers may enjoy a movie while the driver checks out the map. It is, without doubt, a luxury SUV, but its outward appearance is more modest than that of many other cars in its class. Soft curves and sweeping angles adorn the GL, giving it crossover allure, but it also has a matte finish that makes it appear rough.

Overview:

The 2014 MERCEDES GL-CLASS is offered in 4 trim levels:

  • GL 63 AMG
  • GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC
  • GL 450 4MATIC
  • GL 550 4MATIC

Performance

All four of Mercedes’ turbocharged V8 engines have 362 or 429 horsepower. The most powerful is the Mercedes-AMG 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged six-liter V8. The GL-Class has four turbocharged engines to choose from (GL63 AMG). There are seven-speed automatic transmissions and powerful all-wheel-drive systems in all of the cars on the market. The V8 engines can accelerate quickly, but they also use a lot of fuel.

Fuel Economy

With 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, the diesel V6 provides the best of both worlds: confident acceleration and class-leading fuel economy.

Towing Capability

All 2014 GL-Class SUVs are comfortable and stable to drive with air suspension. When correctly equipped, the GL-Class has a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.

Design

The 2014 GL-Class SUV maintains its more classic appearance, in contrast to other competitors like Infiniti and Cadillac, who may opt for more bling and chrome. A few additional bends here and there aren’t a terrible thing, as long as this full-size SUV stays the same as it has always been. At first glance, it seems to be more aggressive than in previous generations, with a greater emphasis on curvature and angularity in its design. The front and back LED lighting have been upgraded, as has the grille, given additional heft. However, it retains the same level of sturdiness as before. Flared wheel arches and 21-inch wheels set the GL 550 apart from the 350 and 450.

Ride

Because of its excellent highway manners, we’re tempted to agree with Mercedes when they describe the GL-Class as a three-row S-Class. The GL is an agile vehicle, able to shrug off minor faults on the road. Airmatic suspension, which lowers the car at faster speeds to better road grip, deserves some of the credit. However, a 5,500-pound (or more) SUV is not invulnerable, where the GL’s impressive braking power comes in. The GL had shorter stopping distances than several sports sedan competitors in our tests.

Power

The entry-level GL450, powered by a V8, has impressive acceleration, while the GL550 and GL63 AMG take things to the next level. It’s not hard to find a GL-Class V8 that can out-drag any muscle vehicles at the dragstrip. But even if it isn’t as quick as its fuel brethren, the Bluetec GL350 Bluetec seems more than adequate in the daily grind.

Drive

Unfortunately, the GL’s poor handling detracts from its excellent straight-line performance. With its overly-light steering and hefty dimensions, the GL is also plagued by a particularly invasive stability control system that intervenes in even typical conditions (such as around sharp curves at moderate speeds or over broken pavement). Most GL drivers won’t be irritated by it, but it may be a distraction if you drive aggressively.

Cabin and Storage

2014 GL is a somewhat bigger vehicle than its predecessors: it’s taller, longer, and broader, and it’s space-efficient in almost every inch of the cabin. From the measurements provided, we may deduce that the GL stands 72.8 inches tall, measures 202.6 inches in length (including the wheelbase), and measures 84.3 inches in width. The GL’s stowage area expands to colossal dimensions when the seats are folded in different configurations. The GL offers 49.4 cubic feet of storage capacity when the third-row seats are pushed forward—folding the second-row forward results in a cargo volume of 93.8 cubic feet, which is enormous, albeit not as big as the volume of a full-size GM SUV.
