2017 Toyota Yaris
The Toyota Yaris is a subcompact hatchback for 2017. The automaker’s smallest and lowest-priced vehicle is offered in the United States. The Yaris is available in three or five-door hatchback trims: L, LE, and SE; however, the Yaris iA is only available in one. The 2017 Toyota Yaris is a conventional subcompact because it provides economical transportation without providing much excitement—some rivals provide the former without the latter.
Overview of the Car
The 2017 Toyota Yaris is available in three five-door hatchback trim levels:
- L
- LE
- SE
Performance and Fuel Economy
Under the hood, the 2017 Toyota Yaris models have identical powertrains but vastly different gearbox choices. The Yaris hatchbacks are powered by a 106-hp inline-4 paired with a 5-speed manual or an outdated 4-speed automatic transmission. Sedan models feature a comparable 1.5-liter inline-4 engine that is better coupled with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Neither engine seems especially quick, but the iA sedan’s handling is lively.
We’ve discovered that putting the engine on the boil—beyond 5,000 rpm—is the only way to extract any enjoyment, albeit it’s not particularly rewarding. Both have high gas mileage compared to other automobiles, but not when compared to other subcompacts, particularly the hybrid Prius c. According to the EPA, most models get combined mpg in the mid-30s.
Design, Comfort, and Quality
The Yaris and Yaris iA are better suited for drivers and front-seat passengers than for rear-seat passengers, or large freight hauls in any arrangement. The Yaris has roughly 33 inches of back seat leg space, which is less than some of its rivals, and riders in three-door vehicles may have difficulties reaching the rear seat. Front seats in basic Yaris models are rather comfortable; however, long-legged drivers may struggle with steering wheels that tilt but do not telescope.
Toyota incorporated sophisticated safety features into the Yaris hatchback models in 2017, including lane departure warning, frontal collision warning, and automatic high beams. The Yaris hatchback scored four stars overall from federal tests and largely “Good” ratings from the IIHS, except a “Marginal” rating in small overlap front collision protection.
The Yaris hatchback comes standard with a decent 6.1-inch touchscreen, but nothing else. Fog lights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are standard on top-tier packages, but leather seating surfaces aren’t offered in any specification. Models of the Yaris iA receive a 7.0-inch touchscreen, 16-inch wheels, and keyless ignition. With the addition of the iA sedan to the Yaris range this year, we’re finding that the hatchback—which begins at virtually the same price—is becoming an increasingly challenging proposition for consumers, despite its more practical form.
Safety Features of the Vehicle
The hatchback receives a four-star overall rating from federal testers, while the IIHS gives it a concerning “Marginal” rating in its small overlap front accident score. The Yaris hatchback does not have a rearview camera. Like other Toyota cars, the Yaris gets modern safety features such as automated emergency braking, front collision warning, lane departure alert, and automatic highlights to support its mixed rating evaluations.
