Decline of E-Series

2015 saw Ford discontinue sales of E-Series passenger and freight vehicles in favor of the fourth generation of its popular Ford Transit utility vehicle. The E-Series has dominated the full-size van market since its introduction in 1980. There have been no significant changes to the model line since 1992 when it was constructed on a chassis initially introduced in 1975. At the 2008 update, cargo vans accounted for more than half of all sales, accounting for almost 95% of total sales.

Only for commercial sale since its 2015 model-year launch, the E-Series was built with all examples supplied as unfinished vehicles. For the time being, only the cutaway cab (open cab that will be outfitted with a third-party rear body) and stripped chassis options are available (nobody, is to be fitted with a complete second-party body). It was also available in a chassis cab configuration before 2019.

After being available outside of North America since 1965, the Transit was introduced to the United States and Canada in 1997. It offered better fuel economy and a larger selection of body styles than the E-Series. Ford North America collaborated in developing two of the Transit’s four body styles, both of which are currently available on the market in the United States. The E-Series passenger vans were phased out to make room for the 6.2L V8 engine that was added for 2017. The 6.8L V10 now serves as the only engine choice for 2016 and 2017. New for 2017 was the addition of a 6.2L V8 engine.
