2019 HARLEY DAVIDSON ELECTRA GLIDE

Over the last decade, Harley-Davidson has consistently upgraded its touring models with the latest in technology and luxury in mind, from rider aids to massive displays that show any information a rider may need to a considerable storage room. For 2019, Harley-Davidson has introduced a touring model that foregoes luxury features in favor of a more raw touring experience. The 2019 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Standard is a “Dressed down Dresser,” a motorcycle that emphasizes the “basic riding experience inspired by Harley-Grand Davidson’s American Touring heritage.”

Overview:

The 2019 HARLEY DAVIDSON ELECTRA GLIDE is offered in five trim levels:

  • Standard: Milwaukee-Eight 107
  • Ultra Classic: Milwaukee-Eight 107
  • Ultra Limited: Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114
  • Ultra Limited Low: Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114
  • CVO Limited: Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 117

Performance and Fuel Economy

Speaking of strong engines, the Milwaukee-Eight 107 on the 2019 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Standard delivers 111 pound-feet of torque at a surprisingly low 3,250 rpm. That’s right, sports lovers, I’m talking power-tourer stats, and you don’t have to speed up to discover them. It produces almost the strongest roll-on available from a Milwaukee mill.

Design, Comfort, and Quality

The broad, skirted front forks, tank console, and hard bags all have Harley FL DNA. Although a relatively large front fender contains the fling, it has high sides that make the front wheel visible. Chrome Beercan skirts offer a little glitter to an otherwise inconspicuous face, and they combine with a few other brilliant things around the engine, polished aluminum components, and blackout treatment to produce an almost achromatic aesthetic. The red Bar-and-Shield on either side of the six-gallon gasoline tank is the sole splash of color on the whole bike. Subtle but incisive.

The only thing that breaks up the monotony is a cyclops headlight and front blinkers, which are mounted atop a Batwing fairing. A Splitstream vent relieves the vacuum behind the mid-height windscreen and prevents the head-buffet effect from becoming extreme. Behind the glass, a quartet of analog gauges and idiot lights provide all relevant measurements, and it’s here that we see the primary difference between this model and its siblings: a complete absence of Infotainment technology.

A Simpler Experience

That’s correct, there’s no GPS, weather radio, or virtual jukebox to mess around with. Instead, there’s an open glove box where all of those items would normally be kept. This is one of those cases when less is arguably more since it eliminates all the superfluous things and returns to a basic means of transportation where the motor note and wind sounds are all you need for “music.”

The Electra Glide Standard’s basic construction is a welded tubular steel frame with a hefty backbone and a double-downtube/double-cradle configuration that cups and supports the enormous Mil-8 motor. The 26-degree rake and relatively lengthy, 6.7-inch trail across a 64-inch wheelbase provide natural stability and tracking, resulting in low-fatigue riding even in a crosswind.

A pair of 43 mm Showa forks float the front end, and although they’re not adjustable, they do include Dual Bending Valve technology, which provides a smoother ride than ordinary forks. Outback, a pair of emulsion-type shocks do the job, with an easy-to-reach handwheel for the mandatory adjustable preload function, which means no muddy knees if you wish to tune in for different loads and situations.
